Artificial intelligence (AI) has burst into the scene and is rapidly transforming various aspects of our lives.

While AI applications have been predominantly used in data analysis, automation, and enhancing convenience, there’s a growing ethical debate on whether AI should be given the power to make life-or-death decisions.

In this article, we will argue for giving such power to AI.

#1 AI Knows More Than We Do

It should stand to reason that the entity who makes life-or-death decisions should have as much information as possible, or have as broad or as long experience as possible.

In medical diagnoses and decisions, for example, humans would have a natural disadvantage to AI which can process so much information, have seen billions of X-rays and read millions of medical cases.

AI-powered diagnostic tools are increasingly being used to analyze patient data, identify diseases, and recommend treatment options. Allowing AI to make decisions regarding medical treatments, surgeries, or drug administration can significantly improve patient outcomes by considering vast datasets and the latest medical research.

#2 It Will Reduce Human Error

Human judgment, while valuable, is not infallible. In high-stress situations, individuals may make mistakes due to stress, fatigue, or emotional factors. AI systems, on the other hand, can process vast amounts of data, make calculations, and analyze patterns without being influenced by emotions or external factors.

While AI systems are not (and will never be) perfect, they can learn from mistakes and continuously improve their decision-making abilities. This iterative learning process can lead to significantly more accurate and reliable decision-making over time.

#3 For Faster Response Time

AI systems can analyze and process information at a speed far beyond human capabilities. In life-threatening situations, such as medical emergencies or military conflicts, seconds can make the difference between life and death.

AI systems can make split-second decisions based on vast datasets, potentially saving more lives by reducing response times.

#4 AI Is Neutral, Fair & Consistent

AI systems do not have personal stakes or emotions, ensuring impartiality in decision-making. When life-or-death decisions need to be made, it is crucial to have a neutral and objective assessment of the situation. AI can provide this impartiality, ensuring that personal beliefs, prejudices, or affiliations do not sway decisions.

AI systems can be programmed to make decisions based on consistent criteria and adhere to established rules and guidelines. This can help eliminate biases and ensure fairness in life-or-death decisions. Humans are inherently subject to cognitive biases and emotions, which can affect their judgment. AI, when programmed ethically, can adhere to principles of justice and fairness.

The discussion about AI in life-or-death decisions will continue and will involve not just experts in AI ethics, and policymakers, but the public to strike the balance between human judgment and the advantages that AI can offer in situations where human lives hang in the balance.

That said, it would seem, based on the arguments above that an AI system that follows strict ethical guidelines, and has oversight and accountability can serve humanity’s best interests.

Please do share your thoughts.
