Donald Trump says no other president did what he’s done with tariffs. He’s not wrong. But here’s the thing: there’s a reason for that.
Most presidents didn’t do it because they understood it would make things worse for American workers, businesses, and families.
Trump acted like he was the first to think of tariffs. He wasn’t. He was just the first in a long time to ignore how badly they can backfire.

What Are Tariffs — and Why Do They Matter?
A tariff is a tax on things we buy from other countries. Imagine a company in the U.S. wants to buy parts from China to build washing machines. If there’s a tariff, those parts cost more. So the company has to either raise prices or cut costs — sometimes by laying off workers.
The thing is, this is not the first time Trump has played with tariffs. He’s done it in his first term. That one was with less fanfare.
The lesson that time should have been learned…
He slapped huge tariffs on over $350 billion worth of Chinese goods starting in 2018. He said it would hurt China and bring jobs back to the U.S.
